What it can feel like
A deep low back ache may spread into the buttocks or upper thighs. Sitting, bending, or lifting may aggravate it. Symptoms alone do not identify the source.
How it is evaluated
The history, examination, and imaging need to fit together. Disc changes on MRI also occur in people without pain. Disc pain can overlap with nerve-related, joint, muscle, or vertebral endplate pain.
How care is planned
Care begins with a tailored rehabilitation plan and appropriate medicines. Selected disc-directed procedures may be discussed when symptoms persist. Evidence and insurance coverage vary, and disc regrowth is not established.
