What the treatment does
Medial branch blocks temporarily numb nerves supplying the facet joints. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat to interrupt pain signaling through selected medial branch nerves.
Who may be considered
A meaningful response to appropriately performed diagnostic blocks can support consideration of ablation. Selection and insurance requirements vary.
Expectations and risks
Relief is variable and nerves may recover over time. Temporary soreness or altered sensation can occur. Bleeding, infection, nerve injury, and persistent or worsened pain are possible.
