Condition guide

Neuropathic pain

Pain related to nerve injury or disease, including selected peripheral neuropathies and CRPS.

What it can mean

Neuropathic pain arises from a lesion or disease affecting the sensory nervous system. Burning, electric pain, tingling, or sensitivity can occur, but the description alone is not diagnostic.

How it is evaluated

Evaluation considers the distribution of pain, sensation, strength, underlying disease, and appropriate tests. Diabetes, nerve injury, and other causes require individualized care.

How care is planned

Treatment may combine care for the underlying condition, rehabilitation, medication, and selected stimulation therapies. CRPS requires a careful clinical diagnosis and multidisciplinary management.

Your diagnosis depends on an individual evaluation. Several pain sources can overlap.
